Refining the leg's stitch to the body in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max )

If there are surplus vertices in either of the spline cage sections, near the stitching joints, that leads to holes in the surface in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Refine extra vertices along the leg and create line through them. This is shown in the figure. It may not be required, if the joint of both the spline cages has the same no: of vertices.

The figure shows how the lack of a vertex, which resulted in a hole under the hip, is corrected by refining vertices and creating line through it in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

The figure shows the creation of an extra line segment running from the hip down the leg, till the knee. You will need to refine a few vertices along the line's path so that you can create the line to connect those vertices in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

This extra line segment will give more vertices so that you can control the thigh region in a better way in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

This figure shows the stage after several refinements to the leg region in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). The hip is made more curved and the leg's shape is modeled in a more smooth and realistic manner in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

You can see that I have rotated the leg so that the legs are tilted apart. This posture is more suitable for later stages of character rigging and animation in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). In order to do that simply switch to the 'Vertex' mode, select the vertices of the leg that lies below the hip region and rotate them using the rotate tool in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). You will also need to move them slightly, or the rotation will look very awkward.

The figure shows the refinements that have been made, to the back of the model, after the leg has been attached in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).
 
  Don't forget to Save the scene. You will learn how to refine the leg's stitching, in the next page of this tutorial.
