Modeling the model / character's mouth in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson

The first step in modeling the mouth is to construct the model / character's lips. The process of lips construction using spline modeling in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) is fairly easy and straight forward. All that is needed is the presence of properly placed vertices in the model / character's mouth region that can be formed into a lip. Connect the vertices using the line tool as shown in the figure.

Inorder to model / character a mouth in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) , we need to construct the cavity of the mouth. This needs the intersection vertices of the lips to be pulled in and changed into a bag like structure. As a first step to that, refine the lips by adding 3 more vertices as shown in the figure.

Now connect these three vertices using the line tool.

Select the two vertices highlighted in the figure, right click on them and choose Smooth from the menu that appears.

Select the two vertices highlighted using white circles in the figure. Move them towards the X axis in the perspective view, slightly as shown in the figure. Now select the sharp vertex which is the meeting point of the two lips (marked in red), and move it along the Y axis in the perspective view of 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) as shown in the figure.

Modeling a realistic mouth and lips in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) is a more detailed task. We'll save it for the later part of this tutorial under Advanced Character modeling section. Now we'll proceed with modeling the remaining parts of the basic head model / character. Shall we?

Modeling a Nose in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson
Inorder to correct the holes near the nose area, refine vertices along all the lines as shown in the figure.

Now, connect those vertices using the Line tool. Dont forget to turn on 3D snap. This should fill up all the holes in our basic head model / character. Select all the newly created vertices and make them Smoothed.

Since you are already quite familiar with the vertex refining and line creation, I'll make descriptions a bit brief hereafter. Don't worry. It will be showing all the snapshots. Now, refine the vertices as shown in the following figures. Please keep in mind that the positions are not to be very accurate. Happy?

Our next task is to - Yeah you guessed it right - connecting all these silly vertices. Connect them with the line tool (No other option, friend). Connect them very carefully, as this time we have alot of vertices to deal with. Notice the way the line tool connects the vertex near the neck.

Now select and smooth the newly created vertices. Its easier to select and smooth in small groups.

  Save the scene as Chapter12.1-save-03.max. You might be wondering why we added this much vertices to refine a simple nose. These added vertices will help us in the long run. We will look into modeling the nose in the next page.
